Blog of Bloodworks Northwest

Bloodmobiles now on the road. Thanks to you.

Financial donors made the first year of our Mission in Motion fundraising campaign a success. Thanks to their donations, two new bloodmobiles are now traveling across Washington and mobile drives have launched out of Beaverton, Oregon for the first time!

What does this mean for our donors? More convenient opportunities to give, on a schedule that fits their lives; a better experience that encourages them to come back and give again; and a simple, accessible way to make a real impact.

What does this mean for our patients? More blood on the shelves when it’s needed, fewer delays in care, and stronger support for patients in cancer care, surgery, trauma, and more.

Read stories from patients and donors below.

An Electric Drive of All-New Donors

Electrical company Cochran Inc. hosted a blood drive in Portland for the first time this summer. Appointments filled quickly, and every donor on the schedule was a first-time Bloodworks donor!

By bringing the drive to their workplace, donation became easy to fit into the day. When we make donation more convenient, more people take part.

Blood Donation on the Islands

In the San Juan Islands, donating blood can take most of a day. A ferry ride, then an hour drive to Bellingham, the nearest donor center.

Four times a year, we are able to bring mobile drives to the islands, and that travel barrier disappears. Students, families, and longtime donors show up. Some for the first time, others returning because they finally can.

Without the mobile program, most of these donors would not donate.

Right Place, Right Time

For the first time, we were able to host a mobile drive at the City of Kirkland’s City Hall for All event.

People who were just passing by stopped, asked questions, and signed up on the spot. A teenager donating for the first time. A police officer joining in during her shift.

By midday, appointments were full. Sometimes it really is about being there at the right time.

Pepper and her Blood Donating Pals

While waiting for a bone marrow transplant, blood donations helped save Pepper’s life. To support others facing the same need, her community hosted a blood drive in her honor.

Because we had the ability to add more mobile drives this year, we were able to say yes.

Friends, neighbors, and even strangers showed up to give, knowing what those donations mean. One patient’s experience turned into action from an entire community.
